By far the most popular activity at Skye Sailing Club is sailing – in dinghies, in keelboats, on boards. sailing is at our core!
If you are new to sailing and think you would like to give it a try, drop us an email and we will arrange a free taster for you. This will probably be one evening during a sailing session but other times are possible if there are on-the-water activities happening at the time.
Can I sail?
We can take anyone over the age of 10 with no upper age limit as long as you can slide from one side of the boat to the other – a bit like shuffling along a park bench!
We can lend you some kit
As long as you have trainers (they will get wet) we can lend you a wetsuit (if we have your size) and buoyancy aid to get you afloat so you don't even need to be a good swimmer, as long as you feel comfortable around the water, it's fine.
What is a Sailing Experience?
If you would like to really get to grips with what's involved when sailing, you could join one of our Sailing Experiences and come sailing for the day. If you are alone we will try and team you up with another person equally keen to learn more, but if you are with a partner or in a family group then we can set you up with your own qualified skipper to show you the ropes all together in your own dinghy. If there is more than 4 of you, please get in touch via email and let us see what we can do for you.
We need at least two persons booked to run a Sailing Experience.
There is no RYA Qualification at the end of a Sailing Experience but you should have some good skills to take on to a course or at least great memories to take away with you!
Can I learn to sail with Skye Sailing Club?
You certainly can. We are an RYA Training facility – our staff are all RYA qualified and we have a number of courses for Adults and Cadets that will take you from a zero starter to Advanced sailor using spinakers. Check the Training Section for dates.
What happens if I become a Member?
As a Member you can use the Club's facilities and fleet of dinghies (new in 2016) when you are suitably qualified, you can also participate in the rowing. You will always be up to speed with what is going on at the Club and the training courses and you'll be among the first to hear about them, too.
If you are visiting and already RYA qualified you can become a Temporary Member and use the Club's boats and facilities. There is a boat use charge at sailing sessions for Members. If sailing is taking place during the day and there is a boat available it will cost around £30 to use it within a defined sailing area.
You said that a taster is free?
Yes, there is absolutely no charge for a taster but we are a charity benefiting the community so always welcome donations – as a guide, in 2016, those we took out chose to donate £25-£30 per person for the experience. A taster session usually gives you around 90 minutes on the water during an evening session.
What about keelboats?
There are Members of the Club that own keelboats and we organise race events for them and visitoring crews. The Club cannot afford to own and run any keelboats themselves but are happy to make introductions to skippers looking for crew. Check out the yacht section.
It can all begin soon if you complete a Membership Form.
